Spleenic Pathology

The most common cause of splenic localization of bone tracers is sickle cell disease . This is probably due to both calcification of infarcted splenic tissue and iron deposition in the infarcted tissue, (iron deposits have affinity for the diphosphonate complex). Splenic uptake also can be seen in thalassemia and hemosiderosis.

Splenic Uptake

  • Angiosarcoma
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Autoimmune hemolitic anemia (ref)
  • Glucose-6-dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Hemangioma (ref)
  • Hemosiderosis (ref)
  • Iohexol injection (ref)
  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Sickle cell disease (ref)
  • Sickle-thalassemia
  • Splenic arthery calcifications
  • Subcapsular hematoma

Splenic Infarct

Sickle cell disease

The bone scintigram demonstrates uptake in the spleen. Note foci of increased accumulation in multiple rib infarcts.
